JUNIOR CLUB NIGHT - Help needed from parents
It would be great to keep Junior Club night (Fridays 6-7pm) running throughout the Summer school holidays, but the coach will not be around every week to supervise this. Could all parents of juniors who sometimes attend (or would like to attend) junior club night, please try to find 1 Friday evening during the holidays when they would be willing to offer to supervise the children for that 1 hour from 6-7pm (tennis balls are available in the 'old balls' bucket, but ideal if players can bring their own). If you are willing to help, please email Sarah with the Friday you could do - slloyd@ashgatepublishing.com - as soon as possible. There will be no supervised junior club nights from 12th July onwards, unless you see a notice appear on the homepage of the website with dates of supervised nights (in response to parents offering to supervise). Very many thanks. |

CLUB MORNINGS & EVENINGS - During the holidays.
During the Summer holidays - ie from now until the second week in September - all club mornings and evenings will be running but there will only occasionally be a coach co-ordinating at Ladies, Vets and Rusty Rackets mornings/evenings (all others are 'coach free' anyway). Please do turn-up for some sociable games against other players (non-members welcome too - just put £3 visitor's fee in suggestions box), but do remember to bring some tennis balls with you. There are a number of players who can only really attend during the school holidays, so it would be great if players continued to gather for some sociable play on Wednesday and Friday mornings, and Wednesday evenings. See details of times on website: www.cheritontennisclub.co.uk/pay&playsessions.htm.

DATES FOR SEPTEMBER TOURNAMENTS - All ages
To finish the Summer season we plan to run both the delayed Family Doubles tournament, and the planned Club Tournament weekend during September. You can enter any of these tournaments from today until a week before the event date - just email Sarah (slloyd@ashgatepublishing.com) saying who is entering for which event. As we only have 2 courts, all these tournaments will have limited player entry, so do email your names to enter as soon as you can. We hope the Adult Doubles Tournament will attract a great entry from the Veterans this year as they haven't had many opportunities to join in the sociable events so far.
These will be the last chances this year for friendly club competitions, so do play in as many as you can. £2 entry per player:
Sunday 14th September - Family Doubles Tournament
Enter as a pair - 1 Adult + 1 Junior, or 2 Juniors. Or enter the special Mini Tennis Red tournament with 1 Adult/junior/mini + 1 Mini player (5-10yrs).
Round-robin doubles play from 2pm, followed by refreshments.
Saturday 27th September - Junior Club Singles Tournament
2pm start. (15&under juniors); £3 entry fee
Sunday 28th September - Adult Doubles Club Tournament
2pm start.

WATCH MORE GREAT TENNIS - LIVE
JOIN A CLUB TRIP TO THE ALBERT HALL - see Cash, Sampras, Edberg etc
We are planning to organise a group of adults and any accompanying juniors, to go up to London one evening between 2-7th December to watch some of the old (ie over 35 at least) greats play in the Black Rock Masters. We will probably organise a coach, to arrive at the Albert Hall at c.7.30pm. It will be quite a late night but should be great. If you are interested in joining the trip, please email as soon as possible: slloyd@ashgatepublishing.com
There is also now a poster in the club house providing information on the Davis Cup match coming up at Wimbledon against Austria (19-21 September). This should also be a great occasion and you can book tickets online. |
INTER-SCHOOLS TOURNAMENT - 'THE CHERITON CUP'
Three schools entered our new inter-schools tennis tournament for 7 and 8 year olds this year: Itchen Abbas Primary, Sun Hill Juniors, and Cheriton Primary. Each school selected their own team of 8 players, aged 7 & 8 years, to play in our mini red tournament. All children played 3 singles matches each in their particular round robin box, with the individual wins added up to find the winning school team. Winners of the 4 boxes were: Ben, Daniel, Zac and William. The winning school this year, and the first school to win the new Schools Tournament 'Cheriton Cup', was Cheriton Primary School. Well done to all players, and very many thanks to the kind parents and school helpers who stood in the rain to referee on each court. We hope to make this an annual event with schools competing for the cup each year.

AROUND VILLAGES CHARITY TOURNAMENT
The weather was finally kind and we had a great turnout for our Around Villages Charity Tennis Tournament this year. 7 local courts were used, with 7 or 8 players on each court playing round robin doubles matches all morning. All players gathered back at the tennis club for a great lunch, and a short talk by John Britton who explained the work of the charity we were raising money for - 'Get Kids Going'. Thanks to all who kindly let us use their courts for the tournament and hosted morning play, and thanks to Alison Pearce and her team of salad and pudding makers for arranging such a wonderful lunch, and to Jo Tyler for supplying delicious salmon and ham. We raised over £800 for 'Get Kids Going' - which will help go towards supplying sports wheelchairs for children. Very many thanks, and please play next year too!

CHERITON'S MINI TENNIS ORANGE SQUAD - SUCCESS
Our MT Orange squad have been entering a number of official LTA MT Orange tournaments at local clubs over the past couple of months. Joe Johnstone, Daniel Smith, William Thoday, and Oliver Cook, have all been playing brilliantly in recent tournaments at River Park tennis club, and the Hampshire Club (on the lovely carpet!). Particular congratulations to Oliver who won the Hampshire Club tournament, and Dan who reached the semi-finals at River Park, but all our players played really well and behaved like great players too. |

JUNIOR HAMPSHIRE CLUB LEAGUE MATCHES
The 'Cheriton Chargers' and 'Cheriton Cavaliers'
We have two new junior teams in the Hampshire Junior Club Leagues - the 12&Under Cheriton Chargers, and the 14&Under Cheriton Cavaliers. The Cavaliers lost their first match against Winchester (one of the best teams in Hampshire), and have 4 more matches left to play (news to follow). Well done to the 'Chargers' who played really well to beat the Compton Hot Dogs, and also played valiantly in gale force winds at home against the Totton Tigers (they managed to cope with the wind a little better and took the match). The lastest team to face the 'Chargers' playing on form, were the 'Hales Stars'. Our Chargers team consisted of Jonny, Tim, George and Charlie, who travelled down to New Milton and played at Hale Gardens Tennis Club. We won 2 out of our 4 close singles matches (Jonny and George both winning), and George and Charlie produced a nail-biting deciding set tie-break in their doubles match narrowly losing the tie-break 10-12. Parents went home mentally exhausted from the tension! The 'Chargers' squad this season consists of: Jack Dobbie, Mark Cribb, Myles Greenwood, Charlie Smith, George Ayling, Charlie Anderson, Jonny Hart, Fergus Young, Tim Pearce, and Robert Carnegy.

CHERITON LADIES TEAM SUCCESS
Our Ladies Team has started to break our CTC tradition of rarely winning league matches - they have now won against a number of clubs in their division of the East Hants Summer League. The Vets team results are presently not known in detail - which could be good or bad news. Full details of our Summer league results will appear in the next newsletter - by which time the Summer league matches will have ended. Many thanks to all players who have joined in and played for Cheriton Tennis Club in the league matches - it's great to have Cheriton on the map in the county tennis competition scene at adult, as well as mini and junior, level. Get ready to wrap up for those Winter matches.

WIMBLEDON TICKETS 2009! WANT TO GO? Act Now.
Were you there for 'that match'? Sadly, few of us were but there's likely to be another similar match next year of course. We managed to gain a few extra Wimbledon tickets for club members this year due to members making a good start with signing up to the new British Tennis Membership scheme - clubs are now assessed by the LTA according to how many British Tennis members they have. Our Wimbledon Ticket Allocation by the LTA for 2009 will be based on how many individual (adults, juniors and minis) British Tennis members we have by 30th November 2008. Also, all junior and mini players (and adults) need to become British Tennis members if they are to enter any matches or tournaments (including at the club), and we also hope all children and adults who sign up for any coaching at the club will be club British Tennis Members before they sign up for club courses. This is a major focus by the LTA to help the growth of British Tennis, and hence for all the clubs too. And we do of course want to gain as many Wimbledon 2009 tickets as we can for members (only British Tennis members will be entered into the club draw next year). If any members of your family have not yet signed up as LTA British Tennis members (it is free), please do so now if you can. You can do this quickly online at - http://www.lta.org.uk/membership. We will also be sending out forms soon to all club members who have not yet signed up in the hope they will do so now. Very many thanks for your help. |
CHILDREN'S SUMMER HOLIDAY CAMPS - Booking up fast
Don't forget to send your Summer Holiday tennis camp forms and cheques back to Brett as soon as possible, if your children would like to take part in Brett's holiday camps - weeks of 4th and 10th August (book for 1 day or more). Please do not leave booking forms in the suggestions box, as Brett will not receive these. Please send the forms to Brett (address on the booking form). Booking form available on the website here: www.cheritontennisclub.co.uk/Courses.htm |
SEE PICTURES & REPORTS OF EVENTS & MATCHES - ON WEBSITE
Don't forget that the Past Events section of the club website has photos and short reports of various club events and matches that have taken place in 2008, and you can still see 2007 pictures and reports too. Do take a look at:

MESS & MOW
We have some lazy pigeons causing problems to our new courts - their mess, when dried onto the courts, causing the surface of the courts to lift badly and create holes. If you see any birds' mess on the courts and you are happy to help, please try to give it a quick gentle scrub (brush under kitchen sink). There are still a few spaces on mowing rota too if anybody is looking for extra exercise this summer/autumn too. Very many thanks. |
SEEKING ...... AUDITOR FOR CLUB ACCOUNTS
Our Treasurer Jane Bracey would be very pleased to hear from any accountant (or similar!) who could kindly agree to audit the tennis club accounts at the end of the year. Free club membership is the reward.
Please email Jane if you are willing, at: jeb.beech@btinternet.com Many thanks.

LOST & FOUND
Has anybody found an old Panama hat on the top of the kitchen cupboards? Please contact a club committee member if you have. There is lots of lost property sitting in the clubhouse at the moment - mainly children's tops (good ones, so please reclaim). Very many thanks. |
