Starting this Saturday. 3rd May
JUNIOR & MINI TENNIS COMPETITION SATURDAYS

Run on each 1st & 3rd Saturday afternoons during term-time.

If you can have a rally on a red, orange, green or full yellow ball court, come along and play a few matches against other players of your age and level at the appropriate time, starting this Saturday 3rd May. Red and Orange will run simultaneously from 3.30-4.30pm; Juniors & Green competition play from 2-3.30pm (play your club ladder matches too if there's a chance). Competitions will only run if there are more than 4 players. Win prizes and the 'Competition Saturday Gold Medal'. All players welcome from any or no clubs - bring all your friends!
Play the game and have fun. Details on website: Competition Saturdays

ADULT AMERICAN TOURNAMENT - & WIMBLEDON TICKET DRAW
18th May, 2-4.30pm Tournament; c.5pm Wimbledon Ticket Draw.

Enter now. Come along and play in the first Adult (and stronger playing juniors) doubles tournament of the new season. American doubles format, so you will swap partners throughout the afternoon. This is a sociable tournament, open to all playing standards. Please book a place in the tournament as soon as possible by emailing Sarah (slloyd@ashgatepublishing.com) - maximum of 16 players so first come first serve (assume you are in unless you hear otherwise). Entry fee £3 per player - payable on the day. There will be refreshments afterwards, followed by..... Wimbledon Ticket Draw: at c.5pm on 18th May all British Tennis members who are also CTC members are welcome to purchase raffle tickets to enter the draw for Wimbledon tickets allocated to the club (we have quite few pairs of tickets available this year). Winners of the draw just pay face value of the Wimbledon tickets they win. Only British Tennis members, and paid up CTC 2008 members, are allowed to enter the Wimbledon ticket draw but you can join both on 18th May if you have not already done so.

ADULT DOUBLES BOX LEAGUES
The new adult club box leagues are now up in the clubhouse. Plesae start playing your matches as soon as you can. There will be a shield (or similar!) for the winners this time, so do play as many matches as you can and you might well be champions. If you would like to join the box leagues, just add your names (doubles) on the noticeboard in relevant space, or contact Sarah at: slloyd@ashgatepublishing.com . Full details on website at: www.cheritontennisclub.co.uk/boxleagues.htm.

BRITISH TENNIS MEMBERSHIP - Have you signed up - please do if not.
The LTA now assesses a club by the numbers of British Tennis members it has (as well as how many juniors are competing). So please do join up now if you haven't already done so - joining each individual member of your family who is a member of CTC (not just 1 per family). Don't forget only British Tennis members can win the club Wimbledon tickets (you can join on 18th May at the clubhouse). Next year our Wimbledon ticket allocation will be based on BT members. All adults/juniors/mini players must be British Tennis members to play in tournaments and league matchestoo. So far Cheriton has: just 2 mini tennis British Tennis members, 19 juniors, and 54 adults. Whereas our club membership presently stands at: 173 adults, 132 juniors/mini. It means a lot to the club if all members could join up as BT members, and it only takes a minute to join a player up (it's free). Please just click here to join online (or complete form in clubhouse): http://www.lta.org.uk/membership . Very many thanks.

JUNIOR & MINI TENNIS CLUB LADDER COMPETITION
The new ladder is now up in the clubhouse, but just let Sarah know (or drop note into suggestions box) if you would like to be added at the bottom. Please start playing your ladder matches as soon as possible - prize for player who is top of the ladder, but also for the player who has played the most matches. If parents could help motivate juniors/minis and help organise their matches (short match format), that would be a very great help. Many thanks.

CLUB MEMBERSHIPS 2008/9
It is great to see that many members have now re-joined the club. If you have not yet re-joined, please do so as soon as possible: 2007 memberships expired on 1st April so you need to rejoin now (and join up as British Tennis members too). Please encourage new members to join too. Many thanks. www.cheritontennisclub.co.uk/membership.htm
SUMMER TERM COACHING COURSES - 2nd 1/2 of Term
There are some spaces still for new players to join in the new blocks of group coaching courses which start after 1/2 term. Please see details on website or in clubhouse, and book in as soon as you can as there are not too many gaps. www.cheritontennisclub.co.uk/Courses.htm

CLUB MORNINGS & EVENINGS - Come along & meet other players.
All club sessions (all open to non-members too, except ladies & mens nights), have started again and it would be lovely to see new members particularly. All very relaxed, so just come along and have a try. Vets mornings on Wednesdays, Ladies mornings on Fridays, Mixed social doubles night on Fridays, Ladies night Mondays, Mens night Tuesdays, and Beginners/Rusty Rackets nights on Wednesdays. See details on website: www.cheritontennisclub.co.uk/pay&playsessions.htm.

NEW CLUB COMMITTEE
A very big thank you to all who served on the club committee in our first active year of the new tennis club - particularly Nicola Cecil as Chairman, and Charlotte Smailes as memberships secretary (it was a very busy year with all our new members). At our Club AGM on 29th April it was decided to try to find a new person for each office on the committee each year (with people returning to the same posts if they'd like to in future years, and carrying on for more than 1 year if a replacement could not be found and they were willing to continue). It was felt that 1 year terms for committee officers might encourage more members to feel able to accept roles in future, and mean people do not feel burdened with a long-term commitment. The exceptions are the posts of Treasurer, Memberships Secretary and Tennis Manager - all of which have reasons for keeping the same person for longer than 1 year if appropriate. The committee remains open to as many different members getting involved in running/helping their club as possible - if you are interested in taking on a very small role, or joining the committee, do contact somebody presently on the committee. We are particularly looking for anybody interested in running the adult box leagues, or a social club tournament, or helping at social events.

The new Club Committe 2008/9 Season was elected as follows:
Chairman: Alison Pearce. Secretary: Katherine Probert. Treasurer: Jane Bracey.
Memberships Secretary: Charlotte Smailes (continuing until Dec 31 st 08, then Karen Housden)
Social Events Manager: Nicola Cecil. Tennis Manager: Sarah Lloyd. Clubhouse Manager: Jo Anderson
Groundsmen: Denby Johnstone & Simon Scott. Health & Safety Officer: Charlotte Evans-Smith
Child Protection Officer: Lizzie Ayling (not on committee). Table Tennis Manager: Martin Hubbard
Also on the committee: Margaret Berryman. Tennis Team Captains (not necessarily on the committee) remain as:
Ladies Team Captain: Sally Cradduck. Veterans Team Captain: Simon Scott. Mens Team Captain: vacancy.
Not on the committee the club coaches: Brett Evans (now with the title 'Head Coach') and Sarah Lloyd as the other coach (on the committee too in Tennis Manager role).

PLEASE HELP TIDY & LOCK UP
We have had a little trouble with court keys and padlocks wandering recently - please do ensure you lock the courts and return the court keys to the kitchen hooks after play. If you could also keep the kitchen and clubhouse clean and tidy (including washing up and throwing away your old drinks bottles) that would be a great help. Many thanks.

SEEKING ...... AUDITOR FOR CLUB ACCOUNTS
Our Treasurer Jane Bracey would be very pleased to hear from any accountant (or similar!) who could kindly agree to audit the tennis club accounts at the end of the year. Free club membership is the reward.
Please email Jane if you are willing, at: jeb.beech@btinternet.com Many thanks.

MOWING ROTA
Would you be willing to mow 1 week during this season (we now have a mower)? Please help fill one of the gaps on our mowing rota, and contact our groundsman Denby Johnstone - d3nby@tesco.net.

TABLE TENNIS - TUESDAY EVENINGS
From 7.45pm in the clubhouse most Tuesday nights, Martin and Sandy from Cheriton Post Office are running sociable table tennis play, open to all ages (including older juniors). Just drop into Cheriton Post Office and talk to Sandy or Martin if you wish to know whether they will definitely be there on a particular Tuesday night - or just turn up and play.
