MiniTennis
at Cheriton Tennis Club
Mini Tennis at Cheriton: Mini Tennis and Juniors are a particular focus for the club and the coaches will help to develop progressive mini tennis and junior programmes, offering pathways of coaching and competition play from the youngest Mini Tennis Red players (ages 4/5) through to juniors at performance level.
The LTA Mini Tennis programme followed at Cheriton, is structured around three progressive stages:
Mini Tennis Red;
Mini Tennis Orange;
Mini Tennis Green
Each level uses appropriately sized, rackets, net, court and balls so that children can start hitting and developing co-ordination and agility skills more easily. Other equipment used includes coloured cones, throw-down targets, and throw-down lines to mark out smaller courts.
Mini Tennis Red
(4-6 yrs):
is the first stage of Mini Tennis and builds skills and confidence. The emphasis is on FUNdamental sporting skills such as movement and co-ordination, an introduction to rallying and playing the game, and fun competitions. Court size is roughly 12m x 6m, with 8cm sponge balls for indoor use or special slow bouncing Red tennis balls for outdoor use.
Mini Tennis Orange
(7-8 yrs):
introduces children to playing on a 3/4 length court with low bounce Orange tennis balls. The emphasis is on developing fundamental sporting skills as well as developing good tennis shots and have maximum fun playing the game. Court size 18m long.
Mini Tennis Green
(9-10 yrs):
is the final stage before children move to full Junior tennis. Green lower bouncing balls are used on a full size tennis court. Physical skills are an important part of lessons but more emphasis is placed on children playing games and rallying consistently with good technique. The emphasis is on team events.
